Why
Interdisciplinary?

Interdisciplinary studies aligns seamlessly with my extensive background in social services and community development. This program will help me understand complex social issues by combining ideas from fields like sociology and psychology. My experience in social services has highlighted the interconnectedness of individuals' challenges, reinforcing my belief that addressing these multifaceted issues requires a collaborative approach that combines diverse disciplinary insights to develop better solutions.

Twenty-three years ago, my studies at McMaster University sparked a keen interest in human behaviour, social structures, and community dynamics. However, during that time, I lacked the maturity and focus necessary for my academic pursuits, compounded by the traumatic loss of my father, which significantly impacted my educational journey. Despite these challenges, I have maintained a strong drive to seek learning opportunities and deepen my understanding of human behaviour, particularly at a societal level. My passion drives my personal and professional growth. Most of my learning has happened outside of traditional schools, but the skills I’ve gained are valuable as I return to formal education. Now that my children are older, pursuing a MA in Interdisciplinary Studies as a great chance for personal and academic growth that fits my changing goals.
My educational background in sociology highlights the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to effectively navigate the challenges I face in my role as Community Programs Manager in Timmins. Social services and community development involve many issues like poverty, homelessness, and mental health. To tackle these challenges, we need comprehensive and collaborative solutions, which is where interdisciplinary studies can really help.

In my current role, I oversee several community programs, including the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, the Building Safer Communities Funding initiative, and the Outreach Pilot Project. Community engagement is a cornerstone of these initiatives, and I possess strong management and time management skills that facilitate their successful implementation. Additionally, my research experience as a project lead has equipped me with the analytical skills that will be beneficial in my interdisciplinary studies coursework.

I coordinate the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan, which involves working with partners, stakeholders, and residents. This role needs a strong understanding of sociology, psychology, and the social factors that affect health. By combining these fields, we can tackle a wide range of issues effectively. Collaborating to create initiatives that serve the community shows how important an interdisciplinary approach is, especially for communicating well with different partners.

In leading the Building Safer Communities (BSC) initiative, a four-year project focused on prevention and community involvement, I see a strong link to Interdisciplinary Studies. Both emphasize community engagement and the importance of collaboration. The research and data analysis involved in BSC have also helped me develop valuable evaluation skills that are essential in interdisciplinary studies.

Furthermore, my work with Indigenous agencies in overseeing the Outreach Pilot Project highlights the importance of incorporating diverse perspectives to address complex social issues. Acknowledging the unique needs of the Indigenous community has been vital in ensuring that our initiatives are culturally sensitive and effective.

Engaging with the community is central to my work. I have organized and participated in events such as International Overdose Awareness Day, World Homeless Day, and Food Security initiatives, as well as public forums and outreach programs. These activities have expanded my professional network, allowing me to connect with experts in the social services field, an invaluable resource for collaboration and academic support throughout my MA journey.

Pursuing a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies will significantly enhance my ability to critically engage with community issues, enabling me to consider multiple perspectives when developing solutions. While my projects have been successful over the past two years, I understand the importance of taking a more holistic view of the community.
