Critical Disability
Abstract
This Open Educational Resource (OER) explores the concept of the "normal family" through a critical disability lens, as outlined in Unit 4 of the Critical Disability Studies course. Developed collaboratively as a group project, the resource challenges dominant narratives that position the nuclear, able-bodied family as the societal standard. Drawing on historical, cultural, and theoretical perspectives, the project unpacks how notions of normalcy are constructed and reinforced through institutions such as education, media, and social policy. The resource includes reflective analysis, case studies, and accessible learning tools that invite learners to critically examine how these norms marginalize disabled individuals and non-normative family structures. By centering lived experiences and promoting inclusive pedagogies, this OER aims to foster critical dialogue, disrupt ableist assumptions, and encourage more expansive understandings of family, care, and interdependence.
