Who Am I?
Growing up in a middle-class family, I was raised with a strong sense of community, hard work, and social responsibility. My mother was a nurse, and my father was a police officer, and their dedication to their professions shaped my values both personally and professionally.
Standing 6" tall, I was often, and sometimes still often uncomfortable with my height. I've missed out on things like dancing in public or being comfortable in front of a crowd, simply because I did not want to stand out. Now, I realize how much my height influenced these choices, but it's also become a part of who I am.
I attended McMaster University from 2000 to 2004, studying sociology, which provided me with a deeper understanding of social structures and the importance of equity and inclusion in our communities.
I am deeply connected to my Ukrainian heritage, which I've been committed to reserving since my father's passing in 1997. He was born in Europe and moved to Canada in his childhood, and I have honoured that part of my identity through meaningful tattoos and also by speaking and writing about my heritage whenever I can. Ensuring that this heritage isn't lost is a key part of who I am, and it is something I carry forward with pride.
Professionally, I have explored various roles but found my passion in recent years as a Community Programs Manager. This role allows me to develop and lead programs that foster inclusivity. I also serve on the Executive Board of Directors as a co-chair for the Anti-Hunger Coalition, where I contribute to addressing food insecurity in our community.
On a personal level, I am a proud mother of two—my 17-year-old son and my 15-year-old daughter. At 43, I find that my personal identity is still evolving, and that's okay. While I don't consider myself artistic and don't have a long list of hobbies, I’ve come to realize that being a mother, a professional, and someone who cares deeply about community impact is central to who I am. I met my spouse 3 years ago, and he has been a great source of support in my life. He provides me with the flexibility to balance my professional ambitions and personal growth, without ever limiting my choices.
I love to explore new cultures and places, and my travels abroad have taken me to Portugal, Greece and Italy. These experiences have enriched my perspective and are a big part of who I am.
For me, identity isn’t fixed—it’s something I’m still exploring, and that’s what makes it so dynamic. My focus right now is on balancing family, professional life, and personal growth, especially as I pursue my Master’s program, which is giving me the opportunity to discover new aspects of myself.
